Intro

This week, whilst on the train back home to visit my parents, I decided to watch a film called “This Boy’s Life”. This marked the cinematic debut of worldwide superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, who was just 18 years old when the film was released. I hadn’t watched a drama in a while so I was excited to try something new.

Plot

The film is a biographical drama about the memoirs of author Tobias Wolff and so the story is based on his childhood and the relationships he had with his peers and his step-father. I always say that the best movie plots are based off original stories and “This Boy’s Life” is another example. The plot is raw and dark as Wolff’s experiences with his step-father seep through the pages onto the screen.

The fact that this film is based off true events makes the story even more gripping earning is a rating of 9/10.

Acting

This film kickstarted Di Caprio’s career and it is clear to see why, as he shows off his innate talent and acting ability. He’s accompanied by a great acting performance from De Niro, who portrays the evil character of Dwight scarily well.

The two bounce of each other when on the screen together, showing there impressive chemistry. Therefore, I believe the acting in this film deserves a 9/10 rating.

Characters

Tobias Wolff, who also goes by Jack, is the protagonist of the film. A misunderstood and wild soul, Tobias is a feral, yet likeable individual, which made me feel even more invested in the film and it’s story. His relationship with his step-father, Dwight, who is abusive towards him for large parts of the film made for an unsettling watch at times. As the film progresses, you really see how much of an antagonist Dwight is, so much so that I was gripping my hands in rage.

The slow progression and development of the characters in this film is what makes it so interesting and so I give it a rating of 9/10.

Dialogue

The film contains the famous line “I know a thing or two about a thing or two” uttered by De Niro’s character Dwight in the final climactic scene of the film. This sent shivers down my spine as it incapsulates the delusional aspect of Dwight’s character.

The language helped to show each character’s personality and amplify it. Therefore, I think an 8/10 rating is fitting.

Music

The music is composed by Carter Burwell, a big name in the film industry, who has collaborated with the likes of Martin McDonagh, Bill Condon and the Coen brothers. However, I think the soundtrack he he created was not his finest work.

I wasn’t particularly moved by the music and to be honest I think it plays a minor role in the movie. I believe it deserves a 7/10 rating.

DiCaprio is a delight to watch all the way through the film. In fact, I found the acting in general was fantastic. The dynamic from both Dwight and Tobias was infectious, courtesy of said acting, and was the standout trait of the film. If you had a couple of hours to pass I would highly recommend giving it a watch. Next time you’re sitting on the train, in need of stimulus, I would suggest you download the film and see for yourself.
