Intro
This week I delved into the world of the Coen Brothers watching their comedy “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”. The Coen brothers have released a lot of well-known films and I am a fan of most of them. This film however jas never caught my eye before, but I was recommended it by my dad so the two of us gave it a watch.
Plot
The plot revolves around three convicts as they escape prison and search in pursuit of a hidden treasure.
Plenty of twists and the Coen brother’s usual weirdness make for a thoroughly entertaining story. Therefore, I give the plot an 8/10 rating.
Acting
The trio of George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro steel the show with their hilarious chemistry and superb acting. I think this is one of the best performances I have seen from Clooney which acts as a testament to the acting in this film.
The acting played a big role in making the film entertaining and the chemistry between the 3 theatrical wizzards made for some wickedly funny scenes. Therefore, I give it a rating of 9/10.
Characters
The three escapees differ entirely in personality and bring their own forms comedy to the movie. Ulysses, played by Clooney, is the smartest of the bunch and I found his frustration at his 2 partners ignorance side-splittingly funny at certain points in the film.
The weird and wacky characters are stereotypical Coen brothers creations and make for an enjoyable watch. I give them a 8.5/10 rating.
Dialogue
The Coen brothers bring their quirky humour to the film making for some hilariously entertaining conversations. This is displayed in the discourse as the language oozes with typically Coen-like eccentricity.
I thought the dialogue in the film plays a large role in it’s endeeringness, which is why I give it a rating of 8.5/10
Music
The music is a compilation of songs composed by T Bone Burnett, who has also helped to create soundtracks for films like “Walk the Line”, “Cold Mountain” and “Crazy Heart”. His music follows a western, country vibe which is synonymous with the style of the film.
The music was fitting for the style of the film but did not blow me away. I believe it warrants a 7.5/10 rating.
I am a big fan of the Coen Brothers’ work and this movie was no exception. The story was interesting and so were its characters. Furthermore, some great acting performances by the lead trio made for an enjoyable watch. I would definitely recommend this film for anyone in need of a laugh as you’ll be chuckling all through, courtesy of the Coen Brothers’ unique humour.
