Run time: 1h 42m

“Wicked Little letters” is a sharp-tongued, quirky comedy with a few twist and turns along the way. Released in the UK in February 2024, the film caught the attention of viewers with it’s shocking trailer.

Plot

The film depicts the exposure of slanderous, anonymous letters on the town of Littlehampton and the affect it has on its people. What’s more is that the film is based off true events.

The plot is not without it’s surprises and it keeps the viewer engaged however, I wouldn’t say that the story was particularly spectacular and so I would rate the plot of this film a 7.5/10.

Acting

With the likes of Olivia Coleman and Timothy Spall headlining the film, the acting carries the movie all the way through. The veterans of the cast execute their jobs very well and actress Jessie Buckley provides a rivoting, rebellious performance.

The acting in this film is it’s best feature and so I would rate it an 8.5/10.

Characters

The film is centred around 2 characters, Edith Swan and Rose Gooding. They are both completely different in terms of status and personality yet they develop a close relationship which is later torn apart. On one side is the boisterous, extrovert personality of Gooding, which causes her to have a shameful reputation and the other side is the quiet, timid character of miss Swan who is thought of in much better regard.

The character arcs between the two make for a very interesting watch and keep the reader guessing “who is the real Antagonist?” Therefore I will give the characters an 8/10 rating.

Dialogue

The dialogue serves as a cold slap to the face to shock viewers into laughter. The vulgar and at times cringe worthy language plays a role in the identity and the humour of the film. Best not to take your grandmother though.

I found the writing of Johnny Sweet charming and witty despite it’s offensive tone and so I would rate the dialogue and 8/10.

Music

The soundtrack to the film is composed of 20 songs made by Isobel Waller-Bridge. She weaves her songs to the style of the film in a clever way however, it doesn’t knock your socks off.

Although the music is playful and enigmatic, I feel it can be forgotten when compared to other aspects of the film and so I will give it a 7/10 rating.

It has come to the time where I give my verdict on whether this film is worth a watch or not. Whilst your sitting on the train waiting station, I recommend watching this film to pass a few hours as it will have you giggling guiltily throughout as long as you don’t find the humour too naughty.
