Intro

From crime thrillers to sci-fi adventures, this week I am reviewing “12 Monkeys”. Starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, this futuristic, psychogical thriller was subject to plenty of acclaim from fellow movie goers. Having a couple of hours to kill, I decided to lend my attention and embrace my inner sci-fi nerd.

Plot

The story was based off of a short featurrette by Chris Marker, which was released in 1962. It centres around protagonist James Cole, a convict turned agent, who is sent back in time to gather information in an attempt to stop and inpending apocalyptic disease.

I found the plots gradual unravelling riveting with a shocking climax that made me want to rewatch it right from the start. Therefore, I give it an 8.5/10 rating.

Acting

Both Willis and Pitt are accompanied by Madaleine Stowe and Christopher Plummer and so its fair to say that film possesses an impressive acting ensemble. Stowe brings forward a particular impressive performance and the likes of Willis and Pitt bring that same charisma and flare that they’re famous for.

The cast presented a solid display earning itself a rating of 8.5/10.

Characters

The character of James Cole, played by Willis, is a very complex and intriguing persona. His moral arc of convicted criminal turn time-travelling hero makes for an entertaining watch and I found his psychological struggle to deal with the alternate events of history fascinating. Furthermore, he is paired by an equally interesting character in Pitt’s mad and eccentric Jeffrey Goines.

The characters were key to making the film captivating and enjoyably and that is why I’m awarding it an 8.5/10 rating.

Dialogue

The screenplay was written by husband and wife David and Janet Peoples. David has a history of being a part of succesful movies having co-written for ‘Blade runner’ and written for ‘Unforgiven’. It is clear to see his writing prowess in the script as there are multiple hidden messages and subtle lines that nod to the films shocking climax.

The dialogue was enigmatic and engrossing adding to the films appeal. Therefore, I give it a rating of 8/10.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Paul Buckmaster, an English musician who had collaborated with the likes of Elton John and David Bowie. Although it wasn’t stand out, the score definitely added to the tense and mysterious nature of the film.

A solid soundtrack that nicely blends in with the film is why I will be giving the music a 7.5/10 rating.

Final verdict

If you like Sci-Fi flicks with plenty of twists and turns then I’d recommend giving 12 Monkeys a watch. I found it’s intricate plot thoroughly enjoyable and the characters were equally as engrossing. All of that paired with solid performances from a standout cast made for an amusing viewing. All in all, it was 2 hours well spent.
